Paper History
Paper has long gone
back in time beginning with the ancient Egyptians and continuing to the
present day. For many thousands of years, hand-made methods took precedence
and then, during the 19th century paper production became industrialized.
Originally intended purely for writing and printing purposes, a wide variety
of paper grades and uses are now available to the consumer.

are not made from paper. Some are made from polymer clay, however I feel
that this section is an appropriate place to list any tutorials for air dry
clays regardless of the basis of their chemical make up.

paper industry in Wisconsin makes a more diverse array of paper
products than any other state, and has led the nation in papermaking
for nearly 50 years.
Paper Terminology
Couching:
(pronounced cooching) Transferring
the sheet of paper from the frame to the absorbent material.
Deckle:
A frame that holds the pulp in
place and determines the size of the paper.
Fibrous:
Made of fibers; a fiber is one of
the thin, (generally microscopic) strands which comprise plant
tissue.
Pulp:
Fibrous material prepared from
wood or recovered waste paper for use in manufacturing paper.
Recycle:
Reuse of a material.
Slurry:
A liquid mixture made up of
fibers and fillers used in papermaking.
Choosing the right materials for the
project...Which is right for me:
This is a big question
that we get presented with all the time. With so many products on
the market...you must be going crazy! I will explain the difference
here:
Paper is often characterized in terms of weight. In the United
States, printing paper is generally 20lb., 24lb., or 32lb. at most.
Cover stock is generally 68lb., and 110lb. or more is considered
card stock. The weight of 500 sheets of a given paper is the
denominating measure of thickness.

Selecting Specialty
Papers:
There are many different paper types
commercially available. Some of these papers are used or are
suggested to be used for reproduction of certain flowering
plants and foliage in miniature.
Rice Paper:
Silk Paper:
Rice paper usually refers to paper made from parts of the
rice plant, like rice straw or rice flour. However, the term is also
loosely used for paper made from or containing other plants, like
hemp, bamboo or mulberry.
Also called silk fusion or sometimes silk felt,
this is a glued together textile, using silk or other fibers.
Crepe paper, or crêpe
paper, is tissue
paper that’s been coated with sizing and then “creped” to create
gathers. Sizing is a material such as glue, gelatin, gum,
or starch, added to paper pulp or cloth to add sheen and stiffness,
among other things. This gives crepe paper a distinct texture and
feel, and one quite different from untreated tissue paper.
Tissue Paper:
Tissue paper is a thin, strong, translucent paper made for use
in crafts, as well as for wrapping and other applications. Waxed
tissue paper is coated with wax so that when it is heated with a
warm iron, pieces will stick together. Japanese mending tissue
is a kind of tissue paper used in art conservation to mend or
repair paper that is old or worn. Honeycomb tissue paper, sold
in pads, is an accordion folded paper for making
three-dimensional centerpieces, ornaments, and decorations, and
crepe
paper is also a variety of tissue paper. Acid free tissue
paper is used in preservation, in folded items such as fabric,
and for interleaving.
Most tissue is
sold in single sheets or collections of 25, 40, or 50 sheets,
but white tissue specifically for bulk wrapping is also sold in
480-sheet reams. Craft tissue paper may be white or brightly
colored, and there are also pastels,
metallics — which are matte on one side, and patterned
offerings. Patterns include animal prints, two colors that shade
into each other, stripes, small floral motifs, plaids, and other
themes. In addition, specialty inclusion tissue paper uses
petals, ferns, fiber, jute,
leaves, and other natural fibers to add color and texture.
Construction paper is
characterized as a stiff, heavy, inexpensive matte or eggshell
finish paper that is not durable. Made from ground wood pulp, it is
available in a variety of colors, and its primary application is
children's arts and crafts and school projects.
Features. One important
characteristic to keep in mind is that the color of most
construction paper fades very quickly. This can be put to use if you
wish to use the paper to make sun prints, but if the project needs
to last, look for the words “light stable” or “fade resistant.”
Another characteristic that may prove important is that, while some
construction paper is flame-retardant, most is not. In addition,
some construction paper is noted as being laser and
inkjet printer compatible, but this is not a common feature.
Most readily available brands are acid-free and lignin free.
Use. Construction paper is
put to many and varied uses, including cutting and pasting projects
and projects that involve drawing, sketching, or coloring. Some
other uses include making posters, collage, weaving
into
placemats and baskets, picture mounting,
napkin rings, holiday decorations and ornaments, gift tags,
bookmarks, paper sculpture, finger puppets, masks, and mobiles.
Inclusion Paper:
Inclusion paper is paper into which something besides the main
paper ingredient has been incorporated for decorative effect.
This is different than paper that includes materials for the
purpose of preserving trees, although there could be alternative
fiber paper with decorative additions, which would be
considered inclusion paper as well.
Origami Paper:
Cardstock:
Origami is the Japanese
art of folding paper into representative, i.e., not abstract,
shapes. In Japanese, origami is a compound word, made up of
the words for “to fold” and “paper.” Typical shapes include birds -
particularly
cranes, other animals, boats, and boxes. The art involves
elaborate patterns of folding and has ceremonial and recreational
styles. More recently, cutting has been combined with folding in the
creation of origami figures. Kirigami is the Japanese word
for paper cutting.
he name cardstock
comes from “card stock,” which originally meant the stock of card as
received from the manufacturer. Today, cardstock, for which
cover stock is sometimes used as a synonym, is used for a range
of paper weights that are in demand for
scrapbooking, as mounting surfaces for prints to be framed, for
making business cards and
greeting cards, and for a variety of paper crafts. The main
features that distinguish a sheet of cardstock are weight, fiber,
color, finish and surface texture, and size. Of these, weight is the
feature that actually defines cardstock.
Washi Paper
Vellum
The word washi
comes from Japanese words for “Japanese” and “paper.” Washi, also
known as wagami, is traditionally a handmade Japanese paper
based on three chief components: kozo or mulberry bark,
gampi, and misumata. Each of the three has unique
properties and is used alone or in combination in multiple types of
washi.
Mulberry Paper:
Mulberry Paper
is handmade from the inner fiber of the mulberry to produce an
exceptionally pure, translucent paper, used by paper and
painting conservators in repair and lamination. It is very
strong, despite its light weight.
Carbon Paper:
A lightweight paper coated
on one side with a dark waxy pigment, placed between two sheets
of blank paper so that the bottom sheet will receive a copy of
what is typed or written on the top sheet.
Originally, vellum
referred to a translucent white writing surface made by the Hebrews
before 1000 BCE. It was prepared from untanned calfskin by drying it
under tension after it was cleaned, dehaired, and scraped. After it
was stretched, it was polished with
pumice - an abrasive - and talc - a filler - as a final
preparation for writing. In the Middle Ages, illuminated manuscripts
were prepared on vellum, as were other documents.
Later, vellum was prepared from the skins of
stillborn animals. Sometimes, goatskin or sheepskin was used to make
parchment referred to as vellum. The names parchment and
vellum are sometimes used interchangeably. Besides being
used for writing, vellum, or parchment, was used to make drumheads
and
lampshades.
Graphite Paper:
Jute:
Graphite is typically used in led pencils.
Graphite paper is paper you use under one you can trace over the
lines of and transfer an image to wood, metal and other papers.

Jute is a type of plant fiber used to make common
items such as
rope,
twine, chair coverings, curtains, sacks, hessian cloth, carpets,
and even the backing used on
linoleum. This is accomplished by spinning the fiber into a
coarse thread. Despite the fact that jute tends to be rough in
texture, fine threads of it are sometimes used to create imitation
silk. In
addition, jute is increasingly being looked at as an alternative
source for making paper, rather than cutting down trees for pulp.
The thread created from jute is quite strong, yet
it is among the cheapest of natural fibers available. It also has
exceptional insulating properties, low thermal conductivity, and
antistatic characteristics. Nonetheless, synthetic materials are
replacing jute in many applications, because they are still less
costly to create and more efficient to use. This is partly because
jute has a tendency to become brittle and to yellow in sunlight. It
also tends to lose its strength when wet and can become infested
with microbes when used in humid regions.
