How the Teddy Bear Came to Be
The teddy bear is a stuffed toy bear. It is an enduring, traditional form of stuffed animal, often serving the purpose of comforting children. In recent times, some teddy bears have become expensive collector's items. Teddy bear collectors are known as arctophiles from the Greek words 'arcto' (bear) and 'philos' (lover).

A hunting trip of Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt's  to Mississippi led to an American Black Bear in a tree and it was suggested Roosevelt shoot it. He refused and it became the topic of a political cartoon. (seen to your left) Morris Michtom a Russian immigrant and entrepreneur in Brooklyn New York who operated a novelty store with his wife Rose, saw the drawing and was inspired to create a new toy. He had his wife Rose create a little stuffed bear cub and placed it in the window of his shop that read "Teddy's bear." The toys were an instant success, caught the eye of a wholesaler named Butler Brothers and with their financial aid the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co., was founded and today still exists.

Cartoon below created by political cartoonist Clifford Berryman called

Drawing the Line in Mississippi"

1902 The Washington Post political cartoon that spawned the Teddy bear name.
